Week 5 - February 10 & 12

February 10

Google AdWords

Today in class we began talking about the Google Online Marketing Challenge. Each group will be competing in it and will be given a budget of $200. This money will be used to buy adwords on google. Each group will be competing with other groups from around the world. The challenge is to develop a sound online marketing strategy for a website chosen by the group. This company website should not be already using Google Adwords. There are two PDF files that can be found under blackboard. One is titled Marketing and Advertising Using Google and the second one is titled Google Online Marketing Challenge Student Guide 2009. The first PDF file is a textbook that explains more about what Adwords are. The second PDF file is a guidebook to the Google Adwords challenge, it basically tells you more about the challenge in detail.

Task to be Completed

  • Get everything filed with Google the week before springbreak
  • Find an industry/company that is unique

Other Information on Google AdWords

  • Google's ad delivery system can serve custom ads based on the geographic area the user is in. This is accomplished based on the IP address being broadcast by the user's computer (IP address is the numerical address of the computer).
  • When there are no ads being displayed on the right side, it usually means that no one is bidding on that specific keyword and it is often inexpensive.
  • Google's Ad Content network can show ads on various affiliated sites such as the Wall Street Journal.

Marketing 470 Criteria

  • Find a small local company that has a website and has enough traffic.
  • This company cannot already be using Google AdWords.
  • The company has to approve by signing a letter.
  • The company has to be approved by Dr. Zahay.
